I'm American and I grew up in the '80s when all the girls wore Tretorn Nylites. But I don't get the impression that they were ever popular outside North America (and yes, I know Tretorn is a Swedish company).

My question to anyone in the UK, mainland Europe, Australia or elsewhere: did you ever see any girls wearing Tretorn sneakers on an even semi-regular basis?

Good question. I grew up in the US too so I wouldn't know.

Hey, senzuri, I was in the Bay Area over the weekend. No Tretorn sightings though. :(

I went to Manila, Philippines back in February 1996, to visit my friend who was working on a ship at the time, and he was staying with his shipmate's family. Anyway, Tretorns were ALL OVER Manila at that time. EVERYONE seemed to wear them, they even would cut them apart to make slippers/sandals out of them. I suspect though that they weren't necessarily popular there because of fashion, but more due to Tretorns being manufactured in the Philippines around that time. I think they relocated the factory to some other lower cost country (maybe Indonesia?) shortly after, and perhaps they just unloaded all the inventory on the local Philippine market, since Tretorns were no longer popular in the US at that time.

I remember many times licking and kissing Tretorns and seeing the Made in Phillipines tag!! I would have loved to see all those chicks wearing them there. That must have been so hot!!!
