Re: has anyone ever...
New Zealand has a shoe fence http://www.slack.com/vacnz16.html (halfway down the page with picture) which was moved because it was a highway hazard, but still exists at a new location.
i saw it at the old location, without knowing it was there. I was being driven by relatives on holiday, and didn't have the heart to say "stop let me admire the old shoes" - about half were sneakers too.
So anyone on holiday to NZ, go to Burkes Pass in the South Island and ask around, hopefully it is still there.
There is a picture of another fence near Ranfurly (different location in NZ) http://www.bookcrossing.com/images/journalpics/544/00/5441700.jpg?date=1/2/2006+5:01:11+PM
I noticed just days ago approaching Chelmsford in the UK by train from the south a pair of very old adidas superstars dangling from an overhead cable near the railway - just in case anyone there is curious lol
